SUSAN YOKOYAMA

Susan's fascination with clay began in the rich soils of Kula, Hawaii. Many years and many locales later, she is now being inspired by the spectacular natural features and colors of Central Oregon. The rustic look of hand building and the magic of the potter’s wheel result in a unique piece glazed to produce some sparkling effects and patterns.

Having dabbled in pottery for many years, Susan has developed an interest in the structure of the Japanese tea bowls and the raku process. With its origins in  16th century Japan, raku has a philosophy of tranquility, peace and spiritual harmony.

Regarding the process itself…a ceramic form is glazed, placed in a kiln and heated till the glaze has melted, about 1900 degrees F. It is then quickly removed and placed in a barrel of combustible material such as paper or leaves, covered and smoked for a few minutes. The availability or removal of oxygen results in the variation of colors.

While living in Bend, Susan has been an active volunteer for the Neighbor Impact’s annual Empty Bowls as well as other community fund raisers. She is also the event coordinator and chair for the bi annual pottery show of the Raku Artists of Central Oregon.
