CAROLYN PLATT

I like art to suggest but not tell you everything. Energetic marks make me think of forces of nature on any scale from minute particles to huge geologic or meteorological events. My intent has been to abstract subjects and to capture their vitality economically.

My pieces are all original prints. They are mostly monotypes. That means, that ink drawn on a hard surface is transferred to paper by running it through a press under pressure. It is a one off and non-repeatable. Pochoir exploration uses shapes and texture and the “ghost” (the lift off ink after the first print is run) to create a new image. Chine-colle is a different color or texture of washi paper adhered to the print.

I also do woodcuts in which everything but the image is cut away, the remaining wood is inked, paper is applied and rubbed so the ink transfers.

After I pull a print, there is a moment of suspense, always a surprise. Often this is the beginning instead of the culmination of the process. I might embellish the image by drawing or painting.

The ink, paper and framing materials are all archival and the glass is UV protected.
